Poetry Reading – “The Light of a Good Day”

This was a very early piece I wrote, an optimistic perspective during another time of severe depression. It is still quite meaningful to me today; it is actually quite validating to read these words and see the progress I have made towards some of the goals I set for myself. I am very grateful to myself for the perspective I had and how it has contributed to my current self. 💙

The original piece is below for reference, and can be found in its entirety at https://objectsanddistance.com/2018/03/11/the-light-of-a-good-day/

Today is a good day
For I have opened my eyes today
They have seen
The beauty in the light that streams
Through the open window
They have seen
The Cardinal fly
Through the crisp, morning air
Glowing wings beating bright against a world of grey

I ask only
That these eyes not close too soon
That I am able to observe
All that I am meant to
All that shines around me
That I am able also
To recognize
All that shines within
To see myself
In all these scenes I hold so dear
To see the sublime glow
Of all that is
In the form which I call myself

When these eyes finally close
May the thoughts of what was
Settle softly as fresh snow on the fields of my mind
All wrongs forgiven
No gifts forsaken
Never forgotten
But neither held too tightly
That when I am blessed once again
With a day renewed
When my eyes open once more
I might see the world anew
My eyes might bring to my life
The light of a good day
